Dante: Inferno to Paradise explores the riveting life and times of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) and his soaring masterpiece, The Divine Comedy – arguably the greatest single work ever created in the history of Western literature. Directed by Ric Burns, and written by Burns and Riccardo Bruscagli, the film chronicles the mesmerizing story, at once dreamlike and hyper-real, that unfolds within the poem itself; the story of how Dante managed to create it under such unpromising circumstances, and how it has been transmitted over time. From the beginning, I was spellbound and drawn in. The last time I read The Divine Comedy was in college and it returned with complete clarity. Everything--the actors. weaving Dantes life with the text, the beautiful pacing--made a story so complete it is still reverberating in my body, mind and soul. I am deeply grateful for this film and for PBS showing it.

I was completely riveted by this amazing and moving film, which somehow manages to take the viewer into ineffable realms, through artistic camera work, haunting music, sensitive acting portrayals, and wonderful artwork. Through scholars' comments, we also gain insight into Dante's unjust banishment from Florence, which is heartbreaking. I could not help but live through the pilgrim's fears and rage and hopes and joys right along with him. Seeing the poem made visible through film is simply awe-inspiring. Thank you to all who created this film.

This exquisite and masterful two-part documentary was, for me, a heartrending telling of Dantes life and a breathtaking depiction of his Divine Comedy. It went far beyond what I imagined it could be and made my prior reading of the poem (in John Ciardis spectacular translation) so much more intimate and real. I congratulate and thank all who were involved, as well as PBS for presenting it.

Although the subject matter was grim in the detail of Dantes imagination, the presentation was interesting and wonderfully thought out. We really get a feeling of life in the 1300s and that is most interesting indeed. We all had ancestors living in those times. How different were their lives from modern times. All of the presenters were thoughtful and knew the subject very well it seemed to me. And is Dantes poem where the Catholic church found ideas for hell and how to control the masses? Its just one mans ideas, but look what was created as a result. Thank you!
