The case for not delisting Greater Yellowstone grizzlies

By earthfoto

Comments about PBS NOVA: Wild Ways DVD:

The timing for this documentary could not have been better. It corroborates the efforts of many scientists and the greater public interests no to delist grizzlies from the Endangered Species List in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Grizzlies are far from recovered in the lower 48 and there is plenty of suitable habitat for reintroduction, plus delisting would literally kill any potential for wildlife corridors linking this isolated population with the northern population. Once the states of MT, ID & WY take control, politicians in those states have expressed a great desire to make this iconic wilderness species open to TROPHY HUNTING! This is a highly controversial issue out west. It is believed that this may also be a calculated effort to weaken the highly successful Endangered Species Act. The methods used and numbers of bears in this population that FWS are estimating is now being criticized by many scientists as dubious at best. FWS refuses to provide the science or data to the public or for peer review by independent sources and is only allowing a 60 day comment period for the American public.

This is curious. One of the contributors for this documentary is Dr. Michael Proctor of the Trans-Border Grizzly Project. If you go to their website you will find the name Chris Servheen as one of the U.S. science advisors. Mr. Servheen is the primary architect for the delisting of grizzlies in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem—an effort he has been pursuing for over 20 years. I would call that a serious conflict of interest based on the message of this program.
