When a prominent French politician is found dead on the border between the UK and France, detectives Karl Roebuck (Stephen Dillane, Game of Thrones) and Elise Wassermann (Clmence Posy, Harry Potter) are sent to investigate on behalf of their respective countries. The case takes a surreal turn when a shocking discovery is made at the crime scene, forcing the French and British police into an uneasy partnership.

Comments about PBS The Tunnel, Season 1 (UK Edition) Blu-ray:

While the film, like its two forerunners, is riveting, I must protest about a major irritant. I am on Ep.5 and find it unbearable.
It is apparent that in its original Sky-TV form the film had subtitles only for the French dialog. Then along comes someone who insists that subtitles be provided for the English dialog too. Great, because I want subtitles on all films. Mercifully, we are spared the condescension of 'SDH'.
Like the other two versions, this film is in two languages with numerous switches between the two in most scenes. Large yellow subtitles have been superimposed on the Sky-TV version for the English dialog. However every switch from English to French has various explanations in brackets : 'Speaking French', 'Conversing in French', 'People Talking in French', etc. (presumably to alert the deaf and hard of hearing that they are not being conned into not hearing Lithuanian dialog).
The trouble is that these LARGE YELLOW letters (for the benefit of those with hard of eyesight) obliterate the original subtitles so that one can never discern the first lines of the French speakers. Imagine if this were a film of 'Hamlet' and the (hard of literacy) viewer can never guess what preceded the line 'That is the question'.
Subtitles have been around for half a century and THIS is the state of the art???
PBS must eat the blame for putting out such a shoddy product.
