On Easter Monday 1916, a small group of Irish rebels took on the might of the British Empire. Although defeated militarily, the men and women of the Easter Rising would soon win a moral victory--with their actions leading to the creation of an independent Irish State and contributing to the eventual disintegration of the British Empire. They have inspired countless freedom struggles throughout the world.

Informative and powerful

Comments about PBS 1916: The Irish Rebellion DVD:

This is a great documentary. It does a brilliant job of describing the conditions the led to the Rising as well as the Rising itself and the aftermath. Liam Neeson's narration is supremely appropriate and his voice adds weight to quotes from the period, specifically Pearse's oration and call to arms. As a history student it is a wealth of information.

So Worthwhile!

Comments about PBS 1916: The Irish Rebellion DVD:

I ordered the DVD after seeing the program. It was so stirring to see the actual footage of what took place during the Rising, and I'd certainly recommend it to anyone interested in Irish history. I think the modern shots of Dublin are meant to show that the current way of life there would not have been possible without the sacrifices made during the Rising.

Comments about PBS 1916: The Irish Rebellion DVD:

Saw the 80 minute version at a DC screening and was impressed. Learned more about Irish history in that viewing than most "Irish" Americans have learned in a lifetime. It's a shame the documentary isn't more widely available.

Comments about PBS 1916: The Irish Rebellion DVD:

I enjoyed this presentation. I noticed another review mentions the back/forth views of Dublin. That was done in "The Godfather II". So?

I'm a member of the Collins 22 Society. I've read more than a bit on this topic. And this version does very nicely. I also appreciated Neeson's voice-over non-intrusive. I'm getting two copies today.

Great Story told Poorly

Comments about PBS 1916: The Irish Rebellion DVD:

The great story is ruined in this production, which idiotically splits scenes of modern Dublin with the old photos of the rebellion. Makes it hard to watch with scenes jumping from old photos to people shopping on ODonnell St without rhyme or reason.
