What a wonderful portrayal of one perspective of the Civil War with its roots steeped in accurate history. The sets and costumes are astoundingly beautiful and accurate to period. The actors are genuine and the storyline refreshing. There are some gruesome and heartwrenchingly sad scenes that might offend some people, but that was the way it was at that point in time. The civil war was a dreadful time in our country's history, and this show portrays just that. I have never been a fan of Downton Abbey, which is all about the drama, drama, drama. Mercy Street does touch on the personal tribulations of their characters, but only on a smaller scale so that the focus stays on the main character-the Civil War and its effect on American Society as a whole. Well done PBS! I am hoping for more like this one in the future!

We ordered it on the bases of Ridley Scott's name as an Executive Producer and the Civil War historic content. I suppose, since it's told from a medical perspective, I ought to have expected the show to hinge on medical rather than historic drama but I don't need the gross dramatization of blood & surgery to get the idea. Maybe I'm spoiled by the high production value of other PBS series, but I don't see this one going to a second season. We'll either resell this one or gift it to a charity for resale.

Civil War Medicine at it's best

Comments about PBS Mercy Street DVD:

As a historical reenactor I can't anything bad about Mercy Street. The medical aspects are spot on. The tech advisers are some of the best when it comes to the correctness of the medical scenes. The drama is above reproach and I can not wait until next season. Great job PBS.

I loved the story line in this drama. I realize it was fiction but really entertaining. I hope there is a season 2.

Comments about PBS Mercy Street DVD:

Not really historically accurate in the dialogue or the scenario concepts. A modernized version of the civil war.

EXCELLENT FIRST SEASON

By Jennifer S.

from Houston, TX

Comments about PBS Mercy Street DVD:

Costumes, scenery, acting - all excellent. Though fictional, it depicts a military hospital during the civil war and weaves in some very authentic history. Can't wait for the second season to start!
