Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Arthur & George (U.K. Edition) DVD:

A very good mini-series concerning a real life mystery solved by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I know the basic story is true, I wonder if some parts have been fictionalized. Very good acting seen, especially by Martin Clunes and Charles Edwards. Edwards played Doyle's assistant, in an earlier mini-series on PBS ("Murder Rooms") he played a young Doyle. Loved the period detail.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Arthur & George (U.K. Edition) DVD:

Martin Clunes is excellent as "Arthur [Conan Doyle]" He amazingly LOOKS LIKE Doyle and his overall stature, demeanor and presence was most credible, enjoyable. The story is so very rich, settings (streets, costumes, cars, restaurant accoutrements, etc, etc) are especially rich as befits the wealthy, massively privileged life of Doyle. While I can only enthusiastically praise this production. . . a couple of comments I can't resist sharing here. Jeremy Brett's highly acclaimed, lg running Sherlock series successfully portrayed Holmes strictly w/o Scottish affect; nor, theme of Scotland heritage throughout the 18 yr series. Other stage & tv presentations about Doyle or Holmes mysteries similarly only mentioned Doyle's Scottish roots but actors spoke sans attempts at Scottish accent. Point? I prefer Martin Clunes w/o Scottish flavored speech for his "Arthur" interpretation. Actually,10s of millions of Americans, Europeans, other w/w viewers etc, etc, account for the highest % of total viewers of the programme. Point? the HUGE % of viewers do not have a clue as to Scottish dialect. If we don't see Sean Connery. . . we don't think Scotland!

How disappointing it was to read programme viewer commentaries from a miniscule cache of viewers, focused to foolish, even petty feedback "Scottish accent wasn't even close..." How disappointing of the Scots that they lost sight of a superb story, supported by Actor excellence all around. Geeeeesh.Talk about "...loss of baby discarded with bath water!" There's a LOT of story to be told about the unusually diverse, genius life of Arthur Conan Doyle. ALL will be happily forgiven if iTV commissions a series based on the massive pursuits and accomplishments of A.C.Doyle, M.D. starring Martin Clunes as Doyle.

I enjoy anything related to Sherlock Holmes, so actually getting to know more about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle enhances and further perpetuates the Holmes mystique.
