Julie Walters stars as the glamorous doyenne of an English social club in the twilight era of British rule in India. Set in a subtropical paradise, Indian Summers explores the collision of the high-living English ruling class with the local people agitating for Indian independence. As the drama unfolds, the two sides alternately clash and merge in an intricate game of power, politics, and passion.

Wound up watching this each week on all 3 PBS stations! I was fascinated by its historic content and the interwoven character development. It inspired me to acquire a few books on life during the Raj period to find out more about the challenges and conflicts amongst the Brits and the diverse population of India.
Having seen the Jewel and the Crown twice, I believe Indian Summers presents more about the Indian views on colonization and Gandhi's work toward a free and united India (a daunting challenge!).

Love this series. Can see many directions for a long-term series. The characters

History in an incredible backdrop

By June

from Boulder CO

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Indian Summers DVD:

The renovated Malaysian summer retreat is a perfect setting for this Colonial story which balances the lives of both the English and Indian characters. Great effort to depict life as it would have been to show the cultural and historical realities of the time -- and the costumes and hair styling is fantastic.
