Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning play comes to television starring Angela Lansbury as Daisy Werthan, James Earl Jones as her chauffeur, Hoke Colburn, and four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines reprising his Broadway role as Daisy's son Boolie. This iconic tale of pride, changing times, and the transformative power of friendship has become one of the most beloved American stories of the late twentieth century.

Charming!

These two wonderful actors are simply delightful to watch! I loved the movie version with Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman, so I knew I'd love this as well! Great acting by veteran actors.

It's a pleasure to see stage icons Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones in the roles of Daisy and Hoke. The production itself is the problem, and Alfred Uhry's slender but affecting play wasn't well served the overstuffed Broadway production that originally starred Jones and Vanessa Redgrave. The slide projections, bits and pieces of a set and moving "car" pieces are distracting. A lot of the intimacy I recall from the stage production I saw with Julie Harris (wonderful!) and Brock Peters in the leads is absent. Jones is better at re-creating Hoke in his own image. Lansbury tends to fall back on familiar mannerisms in the role.

Comments about PBS Great Performances: Driving Miss Daisy DVD:

A sparse stage focused all of the attention on the 3 characters who were superb. I was sorry when the play ended.
