The question of who serves in America's military continues to shape battle strategy and foreign policy today. Ever since Lincoln imposed a national draft in the Civil War to the conflicts of the Vietnam era, forced military service has torn the nation apart-and sometimes, as in WWII, united Americans in a common purpose. The Draft tells the story of how a single, controversial issue continues to define the United States.

Comments about PBS The Draft DVD:

Time to reinstate the draft! An extremely small percentage of the nation cannot be expected to take on the world.

Candidly Blunt and Brutally Real!

Comments about PBS The Draft DVD:

The program provides a comprehensive assessment and incisive treatment of the draft and the concomitant impact upon America. Viewing the present state of America's military preparedness, though, reinstating the draft may in fact be necessary. Present and future conflicts cannot be borne by such a minute percentage of Americans serving multiple tours. A different approach to deferments (especially education deferments) is necessary, and racial and ethnic minorities cannot be disproportionately represented in combat units as evidenced during the Vietnam War.

Comments about PBS The Draft DVD:

i have seen enough- we (resisters) ended the draft- it is now time for people to end volunteer armies- b they us of a- or isil- war sux- any program that does not help us end war is bogus- does this program?
what is wrong w young men and their testosterone
women- do not go to bed w any soldier
i have seen this program and can only approve of those parts that oppose war- study war no more- study wilfred owen, pacifists, dorothy day, transform now plowshares, phil and dan berrigan- etc.
BUT- if capitalists will not relent
we must war against them- can non violence win against them?
