Two different versions, both are worth your time

Comments about PBS Poldark DVD & Poldark The Complete Collection DVD Combo:

After reading some of the negative reviews of "Poldark", I wish to add to the review I posted in August, 2015. Both versions of "Poldark" are excellent each in their own way and also reflect the time periods in which they were made. Bear in mind that in 1975 many TV dramas were filmed stage plays (Watch some of the earliest "Dr. Who" episodes from the 1960s. They are very fun! Plus, the BBC has never had the mega $$ of the American companies.). TV and movies did not have the CGI effects of today. Personally, I marvel at how creative the directors and their teams were without CGI!! The 1975 version of "Poldark" is a bit campy at times, but, for me anyway, it just adds to its charm (I think it's a hallmark of the time period: remember "Dark Shadows", the gothic soap opera of the same era?) Nevertheless, the 1970s version of "Poldark" is very well written and has a fantastic acting ensemble. The costumes; the caked on make-up-style of the aristocrats in the 18th century; the changes in clothing (The introduction of underwear! I just love the scene in which Ross gives Demelza red silk pantaloons from France as a gift and she doesn't know how to wear them: she first puts them on her arms :) ) are all well researched and authentic. The earlier version also reflects the consciousness of social issues going on in the '60s and '70s: Native American rights and treatment; social equality between men and women; legal corruption; religious issues..... Issues that we still talk about and fight for today! It's all there in the dialogue and acted out in many scenes. It's ingenious how the writers wove in modern issues within the context of an historical drama - accurately.

The newest version of "Poldark" is more sophisticated visually thanks to modern film and filming techniques. Modern filming techniques give the audience more "distance" from the actors: I feel removed from the action and more like an observer whereas in the original I feel like I am actually there and a part of what is going on. The writing is first rate and the acting ensemble is just as excellent as the first cast. The beautiful costumes, manners, etc. are all well researched (No chunky knits...). I love it that the original Ross Poldark, Robin Ellis, stars in this version, as well! To have the two Ross Poldarks together in the same scenes is genius and a wonderful way to honor Robin Ellis's fantastic portrayal as the original character. (He was mobbed Beatle's style back in the day!) Both Robin Ellis, Aidan Turner and the acting ensemble have made their characters their own and given them their personal stamp - Bravo! That's what good actors do.

No matter which version you choose, the story is a good one! Both versions are well worth your time. I highly recommend them.
