The Jewel in the Crown was hailed by critics as one of the most thoughtful and important TV dramas ever. This sweeping 14-part remastered adaptation of Paul Scott's 'Raj Quartet' is the story of the men and women of both ruling and ruled classes of WWII India, trying amidst the turmoil to come to terms with the drastic changes taking place around them, knowing that their lives will never be the same again.

Several weeks ago while browsing in the Barnes and Noble CD/DVD section, I found the remastered version and bought it. Although I'd planned to limit my watching to one episode per week, I got caught up in the story again and watched straight through to the end. It's fantastic how Hari Kumar and Daphne Manners appear primarily in Ep 1 and 2 but their stories resonate through the remaining episodes. The Indian scenery is superb. The set decorations had me looking around for my own china cups. How easy it is to get caught up in Paul Scott's story world. It's a bit tricky to figure out how to turn on Alastair Cook's and the actor's commentary. You want to view every episode first. Then, go back to Disc 1. Put in Disc 1. Go to Set Up and turn on Alastair Cook and Art Malik/Tim Pigott-Smith commentaries. Notice the length changes slightly and becomes longer. Click play. You'll see Alastair Cook's introduction. Then Ep 1 begins; however, the official sound track becomes background. The dominant voices you hear are the interviewer, Art Malik, and Tim Piggot-Smith discussing the episode. You will not be able to hear the actual actors speaking their lines, which is why you want to play Ep 1 first as straight DVD. The sound will be over-ridden by the three commenters, but they are wonderful. You'll hear Art Malik say "Not a Winnebago in sight" (!). The interviewer, Art, and Tim will sound like they're sitting beside you, a wonderful, intimate commentary.

Comments about PBS The Jewel in the Crown Anniversary Edition (5-disc set) DVD (U.K. Edition):

This story, and the presentation of it, are both wonderful. The actors, locations, direction and the script are all top notch. I'm very happy that the 25th anniversary edition has subtitles, as some of the spoken words can sometimes be difficult to understand.

Loved it when it was originally broadcast, have viewed this program several times (had an old DVD) but the intros. with Alastair Cook are wonderful - thank you so much. A series that cannot be bettered.

As good as I remembered

Comments about PBS The Jewel in the Crown Anniversary Edition (5-disc set) DVD (U.K. Edition):

After watching the Jewel in the Crown in 1989, I developed a long-time desire to visit India.
My husband and I traveled a lot but somehow never made it there.
In two weeks I will finally be visiting India.
When I saw the remastered DVD advertised I was thrilled.
The DVD's are clear and well done and as good or better than a lot of series we see on TV today.
