Comments about PBS NOVA: Vaccines - Calling the Shots DVD:

So many parents these days are scared of vaccines and this documentary serves to acknowledge and address some of the misinformation and fear mongering that is out there. It also goes into some of the risks of vaccines (they are medicine, after all, which always has risks of side effects) and why the benefits STILL outweigh the risks. Really excellent and a must see.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Vaccines - Calling the Shots DVD:

This is an excellent documentary on the importance of vaccinating our children. Vaccines ahouls be a social responsibility and not a personal choice. Parents shouldn't have to worry about their children getting ill from other children because some misinformed parents have ellected to not vaccinate their children. Misinformation is horrible such as saying vaccines cause autism. That study which started that whole line of thought has been redacted because the author of it completely made up his results to make money. The guy actually went to jail for it. I think people have forgotten the horrors of these diseases because they haven't experienced them.

Drips with bias

Comments about PBS NOVA: Vaccines - Calling the Shots DVD:

I love nova but this one really annoyed me.

Parents are portrayed as misguided rubes ignoring the lordly advice of Doctors and Scientists.

Could be a commercial for a vaccine manufacturing company.

Narrator cites side effects as "extremely rare" and "seizures, but only one", but also uses "extremely rare epilepsy" as example of events that mislead parents. You can't treat one kind of rare as noise and another as signal. They are choosing examples that benefit their position. Why they take a position at all instead of presenting the complexities of issues is baffling.

If you're going to use statistics to make an argument, be clear that n% of side effects are "acceptable", and show us some of the effects of those "acceptable" cases where the patients died.

Examples of parents with whooping cough child is pure fear, since they say themselves that the child was too young to get its first shot anyway.

"herd protection" argument is misused. In nature, the "herd" survives because the animals on the fringes are sacrificed.

The "sole discredited scientific paper" about mercury-based preservatives said the results could not be reproduced, yet they quote a doctor saying we know autism starts at week 6-10 in the womb, but this claim is based on research on a sample size of 11, hardly proof, and certainly not confirmed by other research yet.

The argument presented in counter to the combining of many shots into one was just that "they are safe" without any details of the studies that say so.

I've read studies on both sides of the arguments, and this does not represent the controversy nor does it portray the victims, autistics (vaccine-related or not) and those who suffer from real vaccine-related damage, with respect.

Very disappointing. Nova can do better.
