Carved from a hundred million pounds of stone, soaring effortlessly atop a spider web of masonry, Gothic cathedrals are marvels of human achievement and artistry. But how did medieval builders reach such spectacular heights? On this dazzling journey inside the jewels of Gothic architecture, NOVA reveals the hidden formulas, drawn from the pages of the Bible itself, that drove medieval builders ever upward.

Excellent program that clearly explains the structural mechanics of Gothic cathedral building. Profs. S. Murray, a noted expert in the field and his former student, A. Tallon, along with their Columbia University technical team, have done excellent technical research, as presented here. The segments on the wonderful project at Guedelon, France [@] and its experimental archaeology crew are informative, and the work in California restoring Hearst's Spanish chapel and its modeling is excellent and demonstrative. This is excellent for the lay person interested in cathedral construction, and terrific for university teachers looking for a film which clearly illustrates the basic principals of Gothic construction. The bulk of the film presents known information, but it is well-presented. The segment on the possibility of celestial/Biblical metrics is interesting, though more controversial.

Even if you know nothing about cathedrals, this hardly scratches the surface. There is a virtual cathdral made as a model to find out where a problem was in the Amien cathdral. The point was more about who was doing what rather than the subject of cathedrals. An arch was built, which was a total no brainer, and there was a cathedral being reconstructeed somewhere in California that WR Herst brought over years ago. Its over before you know it. Biblical references to Revelations was interesting but hardly developed. I was so annoyed by the pace of the program, the narrator and editing that I had difficulty watching it. McCauleys is really the best I've seen.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Building the Great Cathedrals DVD:

The prime example of a gothic cathedral used in this
NOVA production is Amiens cathedral. Having just been to Amiens in June 2014, there were several points of interest about the construction and meaning
of the building's archetecture which I did not gather after several days in and around the building. This documentary is well worth your viewing time.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Building the Great Cathedrals DVD:

After travelling to Europe last year, it was truly a revelation to begin to understand the skill behind the construction of the awe-inspiring cathedrals we visited. I am delighted to be able to enjoy this DVD many times over and have lent it to others to enjoy as well.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Building the Great Cathedrals DVD:

When watching "Building the Great Cathedrals," we recognized the New Clairveaux Monastery, where the brothers and skilled masons are reconstructing a cathedral. We'd been to the cathedral 2 years ago, and did a followup trip yesterday to see the progress. Just beautiful. This is an amazing educational DVD.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Building the Great Cathedrals DVD:

A very educational video showing the building secrets of these huge cathedrals that were built hundreds of years ago. It made me want to go to France to see them in person.

It was interesting and informative, but it didn't seem to hang together, and I was not always clear which cathedral they were talking about.
