Cuba: The Green Organic Role Model

Comments about PBS NATURE: Cuba: The Accidental Eden DVD:

Did Fidel Castro's perspicacity enable the man to see back in 1959 where the rest of the planet was heading, a planet contaminated by cars, tours ships, wars, manufacturing, the oil industry, toxic food and water, the worship of concrete, not to mention polluted rivers, lakes and oceans, and a tourist industry that can turn a country into a dumpster in exchange for a few dollars?

The historical truth is that Castro wanted to protect his pretty precious island from aggressive and powerful forces including money hungry oil companies and investors who were the destroyers of any clean healthy environment, powers that can crush any green economic and/or healthy human growth.

So the man with deep love for his country in a desperate attempt to save the pretty island, like a mother lioness fiercely fight to protect her cubs, Fidel had no other choice but to partner with the Soviet Union for safety.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990 Cuba, among many other things, was lacking in chemical fertilizers and so was forced to adapt organic farming and organic gardening so much so that now there are thousands of organic home gardens, and several organic farms on the island.

Since pesticides and herbicides are harmful to both the soil and the consumer the organic farming and gardening is having a positive long-term impact on the health of Cubans, not to mention marine and land wildlife.

Obviously Cuba has been though hell in the last five decades yet like boot camp training that can transform a person into a skilled disciplined soldier, the agony Cuba has been through in the last half-century were needed lessons that would eventually turn the island into an environmental role model for the rest of the world.

Highly recommended outstanding DVD documentary from the environmental point of view.
