4 DVD Set

Modern visitors may see Scotland as simply the beautiful northern countryside of Great Britain, not realizing the complicated, violent history predating the 1706 Treaty of Union. This series, based on the latest historical research, charts Scotland's distinct history and character, both before and since 1706, from leaders Robert Bruce, William Wallace, and Mary Queen of Scots through industrial decline to "Project Scotland".

Comments about PBS A History of Scotland DVD:

We will spend some time in Scotland and this series really prepared us for what we will see.

We learned more about the history of Scotland than
all the the books and travel guides taught us.

It is an excellent series with wonderful pictures.

Something Wicked This Way Comes . . Something wicked, awesome, and sick! A great new DVD on the nation of Scotland!Terrifically entertaining and judiciously detailed, this documentary is Scottish right down to the catering. Our Ayrshire host is never out of sight of some magnificent Scottish vista, so, as we listen and learn, we are doubly served by the beauty of his Caledonian surroundings. I was transfixed throughout, and appreciated the wonderful balance between direct commentary and occasional professorial analysis. There is no computer generated imagery here, and when we're apt to have actors stand in for various kings and men of lesser consequence, it's all inspired by the David Starkey school of documentary filmmaking: where the actors' lips are pressed tightly together allowing for narration—and the natural eloquence of wide open eyes selling volume and gravity—to tell the story and satisfy the historical depiction. Truly, it all works perfectly well together and makes for a terrific presentation.I would be happy if there were at least one definitive documentary film on each nation of this world. This 5-hour documentary on the nation of Scotland—beautifully rendered and generously enumerated—hits upon every point of note, and is therefore the very definition of definitive. Photographed amidst wonderful landscapes and showing off some of the worlds most well-preserved castles, the work itself is a thing a beauty. The History of Scotland, presented by Neil Oliver, is a must have for anyone owning a curious mind and [$]
