Surprises come in all types of packaging, and what a glorious one I had when I recently watched an episode of Ken Burns' Baseball.

I grew up listening and occasionally watching baseball from the mid-50s to the present. Long Sunday afternoon car rides sitting between my grandparents, the radio on and being ssssh'd when the score was tied, 2 outs, 2 men on base, and the next hitter stepping up to the plate hopefully to hit it out of the park. Names were bantered around like Casey, Yogi, Jackie, and Lou but I never put them truly into context as individuals. Watching Baseball changed that.

This documentary from the opening strands of The Star Spangled Banner focused not only on the game of baseball but on the American way of life. Men wore nicely pressed slax, open collar shirts and sport coats, some women wore hats and even furs to the games, and kids wore big grins looking at their heroes of the day. The old newsreels clips and commentary were priceless, and at times I could of sworn I saw my dad and uncles in the crowd, memories great and sad.

In addition to the footage and the soundtrack, the commentary, whether a voiceover or stories from Billy Crystal about his first trip to a game in the city, to varied writers fondly remembering and copying Casey Stengel and his ways of talking to the press brought a smile to my face and a deep chuckle in the way the story was told with such humor and fondness for the person.

I've watched more episodes, and to be truthful I want more. I look forward to the new upcoming Tenth Inning to bring the game up to date, and round off a memorable learning experience.

A truly amazing documentary!

I loved the first nine innings from the original series. Even then, the slant on the Yankees and Red Sox was pervasive. You can't ignore them...but even during a piviotal part of American history, 9/11, two other rivals set the tone for the rest of baseball to follow.

The Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets played the FIRST game in New York after the attacks. Mr. Burns - how can you ignore the significance of, not only the game, but of what happened before it and during that game?
These two NL East Division rivals played a game bigger than any 2003 or 2004 ALCS game (which was so richly covered by the filmakers).

Showing national pride, unity and respect, both teams hugged each other after the national anthem. The Mets, showing New York pride and class (a rare feat) wore the caps of the protective agencies during the game. However, the most uplifting moment in New York baseball history, Mike Piazza's homerun, was pushed aside for a quote from Jeter, a picture of the first post-9/11 game at Yankee Stadium, and a short story from Joe Torre. The only reference to this game was a quirky statement from Keith Olbermann. A poignant event for baseball and to the City of New York lost to more talk about "the curse of the Bambino". Apparently, an additional 2-3 minutes couldn't be shaved from another life and death struggle between the Hatfields and McCoys.

I am very disappointed by how and who the producers chose to focus on when baseball resumed in New York. Yes, the Yankees made it to the World Series...again. Yes, it was a wonderful series. Yes, the somberness of their loss in Game 7 was felt around the city. But to not acknowledge the other New York team that had their world stage moment...and how they got it right for just one night, is a failure for them as filmakers and documentarians.

"Baseball", Ken Burns' series, is a terrific presentation on the history of baseball and the history of our country. My wife, who is not a baseball fan, and I watched it together and we both thoroughly enjoyed the presentation.

Comments about PBS Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns 2010 Boxed Set (includes The Tenth Inning) DVD:

I had seen the original Ken Burns Baseball when it first came out. As I recall it was broadcast during the 1994 strike. It renewed my passion for baseball and my love of the game. The later innings, particularly the Ninth, were special having grown up in California. The piece on Jackie Robinson was excellent. The ending is great with the small baseball field in a snowstorm in winter as an introduction to the future of baseball.

I didn't have the opportunity to see much of the 10th Inning when it came out in 2010. I'm watching it now. Ken Burns picked up right where he left off and didn't miss a beat. It put Barry Bonds, Ichiro (sp?), Steroids, in the proper perspective.

By far this program is one the best that has ever been on television.
