As a New England resident for 30 years, I (and many) were told of the economic engine whales were two centuries ago. In fact, I knew individuals from "old whaling money". But in fact, it was a blur on the screen of history to me...unclear and murky with so much history in America in such a relative short time (200 years). This film brought the reality to an unbelievable forefront. It blended a great script and story telling with excellent archival footage, and key noted micro events surrounded with the global multi-faceted thrust of what whaling became to this nation and the world. All of this was great as a historical learning experience, but when it became wrapped in Melville's allegory of whaling related to the demise of the union, amidst today's global economic oil debacle, and the current golf spill, the story took on compelling story lines. Truly excellent and I applaud its creators.

Could've Been Better
I found the "outtakes", the extra scenes, to be more interesting than the documentary itself. It began to flounder, no pun intended, toward the last quarter.

One of the best documentaries I have ever seen. I was engrossed in the hunt for whales to near extinction, the human hunger for fuel at any cost. Awesome parallel between the hunt for whale oil in the 19th century and the hunt for petroleum in the 20th century.

Informative about our early inhabitants of the colonies, particularly the northeast coast, and later our nation on how the econmy of whaling developed our shipping and trading, first regionally and later globally. We see how technology in whaling, primitive today, really advanced our stature economically until technology in other fields, petroleum, displacing whale oil with kerosene and railroads making the westward expansion easier being urged on by the California gold rush. The authors of whaling voyages and tragic situations in whaling are described in this DVD. This DVD is one of my favorites. I would recomend "Into the Deep" to anyone seeking adventure and history information.
