This poignant adaptation of Andrea Levy's award-winning novel explores the lives of two couples, one Jamaican and the other English, whose worlds intertwine in post-World War II Britain, at a turning point in the long relationship between the two countries. It is a story of tender emotion and sparkling wit, of crossings taken and passages lost, of shattering compassion and of reckless optimism in the face of insurmountable barriers.

I read Andrea Levy's book some years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I just watched the first episode of the Masterpiece adaptation, and cannot wait to see the rest of it. In fact, I came to this site to purchase a copy of the movie. I will be recommending both the book and the movie to family and friends. Though fiction, it's a completely untapped historical perspective on WWII. Fascinating.

Small Island DVD by PBS

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Small Island DVD:

"Small Island" is a wonderfully told tale of what happens to Jamaicans who immigrate to England right at the start of World War 11. The Jamaican men volunteer to fight the Germans in defense of the British Empire, although they face perjudice by some Bristish, who were not accepting of them because of the color of their skins. After World War 11, the men and women remain and overcome daunting obstacles to make England their home.

It is a story of human resilence that I want to share with my grandchildren.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Small Island DVD:

I wasn't sure if I would like this when I bought it, but after watching it, I'm glad I did buy it. It was a thought-provoking glimpse into social history wrapped up in good story lines and presentation. This made it a compelling watch even though it moved at a leisurely pace.
