THIS IS THE ORIGINAL BBC MINI-SERIES VERSION; IT IS THE LONGER THAN THE PBS BROADCAST. The "Diary of Anne Frank" is the world's most widely read work of non-fiction after the bible. The film is based on the hugely popular modern classic of literature, and extraordinary social document that gives a unique account of life in hiding under Nazi terror in World War II from the perspective of a teenage Jewish girl.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: The Diary of Anne Frank (original BBC version) DVD:

I believe reading the book is best before viewing the film, but I must say, this version is very well done and indeed does compliment the book.

An Unsentimental Look at Anne Frank

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: The Diary of Anne Frank (original BBC version) DVD:

In addition to all the other images the name of Anne Frank invokes in us there remains the incontestable fact that she was a teenage girl with all the issues that such a designation implies. This film shows her dealing with that under the most trying of circumstances, and, it seems, prevailing. This is an essential part of who she was, and one has to be grateful to the filmmakers for not letting this important part of her be swallowed up by the conventional larger-than-life iconography audiences have been spoonfed in the past.
