Past Lab ResearchTrainees Will Like This

Comments about PBS Naturally Obsessed: The Making of a Scientist DVD:

As someone who worked in a lab for a three year training period (then later as a funded investigator), this DVD brought back lots of memories and was enjoyable. Someone who has not had that training experience, however, might not fully appreciate the content. In the film, a real-life documentary, a young woman can't really succeeed in the lab as an "independent" researcher for a number of reasons, whereas two young men have more favorable outcomes, since both are in the end awarded their PhDs, and one of them also publishes an important paper in a prestigious journal. All of the personalities, including that of the mentor, are interesting, as are the scientific issues that are briefly represented. The short 50 minute documentary was necessarily fast-paced in some parts --- this likely will cause some non-scientists to miss several interesting aspects of the experience of these three trainees. Several of the "bonus" presentations on the DVD, which include discussions about what it really takes to be a good mentor, and discussions of creativity in science and art, are also quite good. Finally, I just wrote a book that includes a chapter about my training experiences with amusing anecdotes (and also about one of my hobbies), and any interested persons could look on [...]for "Chess Juggler." In sum, I would recommend this DVD if someone has trained in the research lab setting.

This film should be watched by everyone

By Hamletois

Comments about PBS Naturally Obsessed: The Making of a Scientist DVD:

I watched the documentary once and I was at once transformed. I am a math teacher at a middle school and I will be showing the film to my class. I have already told them about it and it all make sense to me now. This is the way in which I want to teach from now on. I want my students to feel the amazement of discovery. This film will most definitively open the minds of many of my students. I feel as if they too, will get their own P.H.D in the near future. My students tell me they are beginning to love how to solve math problems.

Accurate Depiction of the PhD Quest

Comments about PBS Naturally Obsessed: The Making of a Scientist DVD:

As a field biologist, I did not think I would relate to a bunch of protein biologists on their quest for their PhDs. However, I found that although our research was completed different, the common place experience of trying to attain a Ph.D. was quite similar. It was a quite exciting to see students and advisors in a similar situation as I, from self doubt to major discovery. Excellent doc! All people thinking of a PhD in the sciences should view this video.

Simply wonderful

Comments about PBS Naturally Obsessed: The Making of a Scientist DVD:

In my opinion must be an absolutely required viewing for all aspiring scientists.. If they do not see it before applying for graduate school.. it is still a must at all times there after... even for a retired life long (50+years) scientist like me.. it was really a wonderful trip into my own mind during the formative years..
