I remember watching this the only time it was broadcast in New Zealand. On Sunday afternoons at 1pm, if my memory serves. Probably around 1988-9, so I would have been in my late teens. Now as a mostly-White but also part-Maori New Zealander, the historical interest spurred me to watch it, but to my mind I had no connection to the events they were talking about; they were just something that happened to other people. Dear Lord, did I underestimate just how little I knew, let alone understood, the Civil Rights struggle. I don't think I've ever cried so much in my life. To those who have said this should be compulsive viewing, especially in schools, I couldn't agree more. It is far and away the best, and most important, piece of television to have ever come out of America.

Comments about PBS Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years 1954-1965 (Season 1) DVD:

Being born in this country is not a guarantee that one is born free. Thestruggle our black brothers and sisters had to endure should make usall share some of the shame. As a "northerner", and the grandchild ofimmigrants, I can only hope I would NOT have been a suppressor had Ilived in the south. I would like to think I would have been marchingalong side of these brave individuals. What price freedom cost them. All I can say is I'm sorry lest we forget we are all created equal!!!
