If you're interested in battlefield archaeology, "Model T's to War" is a must-see. The First World War began in August 1914, but America didn't have a functional army in Europe until the fall of 1917. Between 1914 and 1917, more than 3,000 Americans, paying their own passage, sailed to France to help in the war effort; the majority of which drove Ford Model T ambulances, later to be known as the American Field Service.

Comments about PBS Model T's to War: American Ambulances on the Western Front DVD:

As usual, where else could you find this very rare video of the U.S. A.F.S. in France during WW1. Now that I think about it, I can't recall ANY other currently available video related to the AFS in WW1. This particular DVD will become a cherished part of historical reference video library. THANK YOU PBS

A little dry

Comments about PBS Model T's to War: American Ambulances on the Western Front DVD:

I have an emotional connection to the topic since my grandfather drove one of the Princeton ambulances. I realize that not much film footage was made at the time. But there were some great stories written home by some of America's finest writers and obscure folks like my grandfather, all ivy league and well versed and read and perhaps some of those feelings should have been shared. The brutality of this insane war was well deplicted in Model T's to War, but the human connection that I have was missing. I'm glad I bought it, but without a first hand connection like I have, the others in the viewing we had I think were not as interested.
Thanks

Comments about PBS Model T's to War: American Ambulances on the Western Front DVD:

This documentary tells the story of the Volunteer Ambulance Corps in the First World War and the indespensible contribution made by the Model T Ford which was holds a unique place among ambulances throughout history. Better made than most documentaries, even those which grace the American Experience, its use of period photos, film, writings and even re-visiting places where the action took place, this documentary weaves together this fascinating story in such an entertaining way that it merits repeated viewings.
