Can you own a sound? As hip-hop rose from the streets of New York to become a multibillion-dollar industry, artists such as Public Enemy and De La Soul began reusing parts of previously recorded music for their songs. But when record company lawyers got involved everything changed. Years before people started downloading and remixing music, hip-hop sampling sparked a debate about copyright, creativity and technological change.

Great for classroom but be careful

Comments about PBS Independent Lens: Copyright Criminals DVD:

When I initially saw this on Independant Lens, I thought this would be a great way to teach copyright laws in my classroom (I'm a high school music teacher). Becuase of the musical content, I knew it would engage the interest of young viewers and inspire a discussion/debate on the justice of copyright laws.

I ordered the DVD and watched it at home and was a little disappointed that some profanity that I didn't hear on PBS was on the DVD. When I show this in class, I will have to remember these places to mute/fast forward. It's a bit of an inconvenience for me, but the importance of the content in the movie is worth it.
