Excellent performances from John Thaw and young Nick Robinson. As the story progresses we easily get drawn into the characters lives and the hidden reasons for each of their individual behaviors eg. why Mr. Thaw comes across as stern and cranky. Why is Willie so fearfilled.
Then the presence of the love that is in their hearts prevail and is the basis for altuistic courage; turning unspeakable tragedy into sweet triumph! Inspiring! Caution to parents of young children-disturbing scenes of abuse.

This was one of the best Masterpiece films we have enjoyed. We very rarely miss an evening with
Laura Linney. Although I must say we do enjoy all the the this show has to offer.

This is a wonderful program, with every actor hitting just the right note. I cry every time I watch it, mainly due to the story and the acting of the two leads. John Thaw is simply brilliant, showing every nuance of Tom's character as he changes due to Willie coming into his life. A beautiful show that is not to be missed.
