This is the exuberant, frequently hilarious and ultimately moving story of a young African-American man on a journey of escape, exploration and self-discovery. Recorded for television by Spike Lee, "Passing Strange" is the semi-autobiographical story of a young man who leaves behind his middle-class, church-ruled upbringing in mid-70s Los Angeles to travel to Europe in search of his artistic and personal identity.

Comments about PBS Passing Strange DVD + CD:

Living far from New York City, I never got to see PASSING STRANGE there, during its beloved and too short Broadway run. It was one of those shows with mostly very good reviews, devoted, passionate fans, and just incredible ingenuity, but which doesn't appeal terribly to a mass audience, including the all-important tourist theater-goers, generally, so it couldn't hang around like PHANTOM, JERSEY BOYS, or DOLLY, back in the day.

The cast in this (including the two primary creators, Stew, as narrator and Heidi Rodewald, in the band) is just mind-bogglingly great, and the characters and plot will have you smiling, laughing, weeping, freaking out, and more, by turns. And thank goodness for Spike Lee, for deciding to capture and translate this stage show, filming (taping?) the last two performances of its run (I *think* that's right--apologies if it's not), and giving us great views of it all, including some wild backstage stuff. Don't watch this with small children, but DO WATCH IT! Buy it, give it as presents, keep one for yourself. Enjoy!
