The 1935 (Robert Donat) and 1978 (Robert Powell) film versions of Buchan's novel are quite different from one another, and the BBC version has continued that tradition. The original film stays close to the book; the 1978 film corrects some weaknesses in the plot and adds a wow finish; and this version compresses the plot setup in favor of greater development of the relationship that develops between Hannay and "the girl." The essence of the story is still there, but this treatment is more about the two central characters than plot intricacies and Hannay's time spent alone on the run. The film has clearly taken its own path, but it's a good path; and the direction, cinematography, and acting are very strong.

Poor subsitute for the original classic
This remake fails to follow the original story and while the outdoor chase scenes are well done, suspense of the original Hitchcock film is sorely lacking. Overall, this production was a big disappointment. ...Read complete review

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: The 39 Steps DVD:
This version replaced a version that I copied off the air while stationed in Guantanamo Bay, which is now only available as "Region 2". I was curious about how the two versions would compare. Although there were slight differences, I was satisfied with what I received.

I saw this on public television and was so imppressed with the version with Penry-Jones, I purchased this video as a gift...I'll probably buy another one for my collection.
Comments about PBS Masterpiece: The 39 Steps DVD:
Would love to see the sequels with the same actors and expand on the love story. A great story performed with a well matched pair of individuals.
Comments about PBS Masterpiece: The 39 Steps DVD:
While I enjoyed the production a great deal, I do think this story is a bit too complex for just a single episode. Nevertheless, I'd gladly watch this again. What a relief to know that Masterpiece can still come up with "good stuff" after the dreadful "Any Human Heart"!
