A magnificent trading vessel embarks on a royal expedition to a mysterious, treasure-laden land called Punt. Is this journey, intricately depicted on the wall of one of Egypt's most impressive temples, mere myth--or was it a reality? NOVA follows a team of archeologists and boat builders as they reconstruct the mighty vessel shown in the mysterious carving, and then finally launch it in to the Red Sea on a unique voyage of discovery.

Fascinating technology!

Comments about PBS NOVA: Building Pharaoh's Ship DVD:

I loved this program. The show proceeds through the inconsistent attempts of current scientists to re-engineer the ancient Egyptian vessels. They seemed a few oars short of a crew compared to the Egyptians but did figure it out.

Astonishingly, these seaworthy ships were constructed in a manner that was quite novel to me. Rather than a keel and ribs with planking attached, these ships were more kin to jigsaw puzzles and Lego blocks. And this construction allowed them to be disassembled, transported considerable overland distances in manageable pieces, and then be reassembled where their use was desired.

The ship was quite a capable vessel when put to sea and properly ballasted.

The logistical story of these ships and their role in the trade and commerce of the ancients added more dimensions beyond the engineering feat.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Building Pharaoh's Ship DVD:

typical pbs comedy (not intentional) as group of egyptian so-called shipbuilders tap and tap on a boat that sinks when they launch it; of course all done so historically; sure; then they wait for the wood to swell- and, it still sinks; then, leap of faith, we found some linen near the site of some boatbuilding- oh, not from their clothes, hey , maybe for caulking; sure; ludicrous, fanciful, not science, not researched- a joke

Comments about PBS NOVA: Building Pharaoh's Ship DVD:

Enjoyable to watch and learn of the ancient ways of ship building and the engineering that went into it. Since the days of Noah, the advancements of using natural resources to build such structures has it's appeal in vessels to this day.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Building Pharaoh's Ship DVD:

I take exception to the previous reviewer, who claims to be an Egyptologist which I personally doubt. This is a marvelous story of intellect and creativity of an Ancient people. The theme is simple, to build a sailing boat using the same materials tools and techniques of the Ancient people. Then to make it all fun, to take the boat and go sail it! Along the way many mistakes are made, lessons are relearned about how to do things and wisdom obtained. What an adventure! Do go and take a look at this DVD
