Thomas Mann's classic family chronicle

This brilliantly acted miniseries, made for German television, is a faithful dramatization of Thomas Mann's story of how one German family changed over four generations. I have never seen a more convincing evoction of 19th-century life: extraordinary attention has been given to everything from costume to the elaborate cityscapes, and the acting and direction are both exceptionally fine. Very warmly recommended.
