Comments about PBS BoneKickers DVD:
Our PBS catalog is well-thumbed and filled with marks -- check marks for my husband; circles for me. Birthdays and Christmas always yield PBS "surprise" gifts for each other -- with never a disappointment. This year, BONEKICKERS made the cut for his birthday.
Here's a review:
Only 6 episodes, BONEKICKERS carries us along through seemingly unconnected legends from Templar Knights to Arthur's Round Table, with an underlying thread of conspiracy and promise of ultimate quest. Thankfully, the 6th episode ties up all the loose ends -- Who is/are Henry Timberdyne, anyway?
If you're a fan of Adrian Lester from HUSTLE, you'll be pleased to see him portray archaeologist Ben Ergha. Not quite as clever, suave or well-dressed, but still quite appealing. Best performance award in BONEKICKERS goes to Gugu Mbatha-Raw who makes a supurb and credible Vivian Davis -- a character who holds the biggest secret of all. Julie Graham plays the ever-so-slightly unstable and distracted Dr. Gillian Magwilde who leads the archaeological team on searches which more resemble "quests" than scientific research. Hugh Bonneville as Professor Gregory Parton is a bit over-the-top with his Indiana Jones style coat, hat and juvenile wit -- comic relief is one thing, but at times this character's lecherousness is downright creepy.
The story lines wreak havoc with real history and the conspiratorial adversaries don't really seem too terribly ominous. Still, if you don't think about it too hard and just go along for the ride, you'll find it a good yarn! I recommend it, but suggest you wait for it to go on sale to buy it.
Caution: There are brief moments depicting rather raw violence, so you may want to check it out before you let the kiddies watch.
I give it 3 and a half stars out of 5. I save my 5's for programs like MI-5 and Ken Burns' CIVIL WAR.
Oh yes, my husband liked BONEKICKERS! Next on his list is NEW TRICKS -- I'm sure it'll be a great surprise!
