From the greatest romantic novelist of all time, Jane Austen, comes a delightfully wicked comedy of love and matchmaking. Emma is the story of a rich, clever and beautiful young woman who can't resist orchestrating other people's love lives. As her romantic plans go ridiculously wrong, however, it's Emma herself who risks missing out on her perfect match!

This adaptation is simply brilliant, the best ever! I am completely smitten. It is so true to the essence of the book and yet has a wonderful modern feel at moments. It inspired me to dust of my copy of Emma. My favorite scenes are actually nearly word for word from the book. The part where Mr. Knightly refuses to allow anyone except the future Mrs. Knightly invite anyone to Donwell Abbey was so funny and clever and "modern" sounding. I was very surprised to find that Austen had actually written this dialogue. So much of the original book is represented in the production and yet the actors have also added a rich dimension of humor and emotion that was unexpected.

I know that it is heresy but I wish that they would do a sequel. I want to know what happens to these charming characters.

A little disappointed......

I enjoyed this version, but "Emma" with Gyntheth Paltrow was much better cast and a had a better screenplay. I would give it 3.5-4.0.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Emma DVD:

The kind of movie you can watch over and over. History described at its best. Fashion at this time is sparked with lots of color and everyone is always dressed so fine. Jane Austen's stories are fantasies portrayed as documentaries. I enjoy this movie and I like Jane Austen's style.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Emma DVD:

I totally enjoy period movies and this one falls right into what I expect from them. The scenery is beautufil, the costumes are great and the plot is the typical Harlequin Romance. Definitely a chick flick.. :)

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Emma DVD:

Being familiar with the commercial version of this film staring Gwyneth Paltrow, I was delightfully amazed at how much more engaging this BBC version was. Emma's character came alive, as did the other character parts portrayed in this version of the film. Definitely a Five Star rating.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Emma DVD:

I have seen all three versions of "Emma." My oldest daughter favored the Emma played by Kate Beckinsale while I thought Gweneth Paltrow's interpretation, as well as Jeremy Northam's Mr. Knightley, superior. But this production brings Austen's book to life even more. I enjoyed this production more than the others. The Paltrow production was outstanding as far as the cineamatography goes, but this production fleshes out the characters better.
