From the greatest romantic novelist of all time, Jane Austen, comes a delightfully wicked comedy of love and matchmaking. Emma is the story of a rich, clever and beautiful young woman who can't resist orchestrating other people's love lives. As her romantic plans go ridiculously wrong, however, it's Emma herself who risks missing out on her perfect match!

This adaptation is simply brilliant, the best ever! I am completely smitten. It is so true to the essence of the book and yet has a wonderful modern feel at moments. It inspired me to dust of my copy of Emma. My favorite scenes are actually nearly word for word from the book. The part where Mr. Knightly refuses to allow anyone except the future Mrs. Knightly invite anyone to Donwell Abbey was so funny and clever and "modern" sounding. I was very surprised to find that Austen had actually written this dialogue. So much of the original book is represented in the production and yet the actors have also added a rich dimension of humor and emotion that was unexpected.

I know that it is heresy but I wish that they would do a sequel. I want to know what happens to these charming characters.

A little disappointed......

I enjoyed this version, but "Emma" with Gyntheth Paltrow was much better cast and a had a better screenplay. I would give it 3.5-4.0.

True to J.A.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Emma DVD:

Gwyneth Paltrow's "Emma" may have had some good points, but serving the story wasn't one of them. There were numerous instances of (unnecessary) deviation from the book; the most egregious was the treatment of the character "Harriet;" she was portrayed as a clownish female oaf. Paltrow looked elegant, but she was not a believeable "Emma."

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Emma DVD:

I just love watching Romola Garai's interpretation of Jane Austen's Emma. She is a master of expression. She is adorable and makes Emma seem so endearing and likable.
Also Johnny Lee Miller as Mr Woodhouse is a perfect match to Romola's Emma. They counter each other perfectly. The scenery is rich and the costumes are beautiful. I love to watch it again and again.
This movie is a work of art. I liked it even better than Gwyneth Paltrow's version.
A must see for Jane Austen fans!

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Emma DVD:

The kind of movie you can watch over and over. History described at its best. Fashion at this time is sparked with lots of color and everyone is always dressed so fine. Jane Austen's stories are fantasies portrayed as documentaries. I enjoy this movie and I like Jane Austen's style.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Emma DVD:

I totally enjoy period movies and this one falls right into what I expect from them. The scenery is beautufil, the costumes are great and the plot is the typical Harlequin Romance. Definitely a chick flick.. :)
