This documentary investigates the extraordinary survival story of a crew of airmen shot down over the jungles of Japanese-occupied Borneo during World War II. The film recounts the rescue of a U.S. bomber crew by Dayak tribesmen, known for taking the heads of their enemies. The Dayaks fed and protected the airmen before leading them to the base of a maverick British special ops officer.

Comments about PBS Secrets of the Dead: The Airmen and the Headhunters DVD:

I met the sister of the co-pilot Jerry Rosenthal while I was in San Diego. She told me both about the book and the PBS documentary concerning her brother and the other airmen of the doomed B-52. Jerry won the Purple Heart and Silver Star posthumously because in spite of his head wound and his pain racked mind he controlled the plane until the last airmen parachuted out and than he succumbed to his fatal head injury.
After I e-mailed her to tell her about my reaction to the book and DVD she e-mailed me images of her late brothers medals. I regret that I could not attach them to this e-mail.

Its a great documentary but my father in-law could not enjoy it because you cannot turn on the subtitle feature. The dvd gives you a million languages to choose from, but you cant use any of them

I just saw your fascinating "Airmen and the Headhunters" documentary. I was a little girl in Borneo just after WWWII when our missionary family traveled up the Kapuas River to the interior to continue working with the Dayaks. There already were 4,000 Christians among them, and my father started a Bible school and trained many of them to start churches. There were rumors of Japanese soldiers still hiding out in the jungles several years after the war. I have ordered the DVD of the program for my 93-year-old father, whom I'm sure will know some "insider information" from that time.

Comments about PBS Secrets of the Dead: The Airmen and the Headhunters DVD:

A piece of history and suffering not many Americans are aware of. The amazing thing to me is that these "savages" were pro America not only because of their hatred for the Japanese, but also for their love for the American missionaries murdered by the Japs. Furthermore it is food for thought to see how primitive, possibly prehistoric, weapons defeated modern ones.
