Comments about PBS American Experience: Civilian Conservation Corps DVD:

Although I was born after FDR and his "Brain Trust" efforts to bring the Country out of the Great Depression of 1929, I live near a state park with a marvelous and well-maintained array of these locally built buildings. In them, one may see not only the result of the CCC program, but the design and pride in workmanship that has allowed them to endure in spite of the economic cuts from which the State and Federal Park Systems have suffered. This is one of the "must see" DVDs for all of us.

A very good depiction of the CCC's.

I wanted to know more about the CCC's because my Dad belonged to the 119th Company in Vermont. He spoke of his experiences often. He recently passed away and we found letters from him to my Mom written from 1937 to 1940. He wrote from the camps and described his jobs and his experiences to her. It made him become a self made man.

My father, who was old enough to be my grandfather, was in the CCC's as a young man in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. He and so many of his relatives and friends were and and told me some stories. How they planted tree seedlings which are now the rich forests of that part of the country. He said they would have races to see who could plant a whole row the fastest. He and the others who told me of their experiences in the camps loved it. My father was particular thrilled with the food, saying he had vegetables he never even heard of before! They all have fond memories of that time in the camps, and it is true that the money went home to their mothers and they got the five dollars once a month and went into town, where it bought cigarettes and beer! They were happy that this well needed money went home where it was a big contribution. For the familes with more than one son in the camps it was a windfall. They are proud of what they accomplished.
