Comments about PBS American Experience: Civilian Conservation Corps DVD:

I wanted to know more about the CCC's because my Dad belonged to the 119th Company in Vermont. He spoke of his experiences often. He recently passed away and we found letters from him to my Mom written from 1937 to 1940. He wrote from the camps and described his jobs and his experiences to her. It made him become a self made man.

Comments about PBS American Experience: Civilian Conservation Corps DVD:

My father, who was old enough to be my grandfather, was in the CCC's as a young man in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. He and so many of his relatives and friends were and and told me some stories. How they planted tree seedlings which are now the rich forests of that part of the country. He said they would have races to see who could plant a whole row the fastest. He and the others who told me of their experiences in the camps loved it. My father was particular thrilled with the food, saying he had vegetables he never even heard of before! They all have fond memories of that time in the camps, and it is true that the money went home to their mothers and they got the five dollars once a month and went into town, where it bought cigarettes and beer! They were happy that this well needed money went home where it was a big contribution. For the familes with more than one son in the camps it was a windfall. They are proud of what they accomplished.

Comments about PBS American Experience: Civilian Conservation Corps DVD:

Although the situations are slightly different to the our dilemma faced today, this DVD provides a wonderful insight into how FDR helped the country out of the Great Depression. Those who feel President Obama has spent too much with too little in the way of results need to watch this DVD to gain better perspective.
