Beginning with the 1929 stock market collapse, The 1930s looks at the creation of FDR's Tree Army; construction of one of the greatest engineering projects of the modern era; the impact of the drought that transformed the plains; and an unlikely hero that gave downtrodden Americans hope. This collection of films examines America's response to the unprecedented threats facing the nation during one of history's most tumultuous decades.

Comments about PBS American Experience: The 1930s DVD:

There is no subtitles on the DVD. Which means that people who are deaf or hard of hearing can't watch this film.

I am really sad that a Public Broadcasting System will sell DVD's that are not subtitled, and thus exclude certain users from watching.

Comments about PBS American Experience: The 1930s DVD:

I really enjoyed this series learning about the first Great Depression (now living in the second). I want to comment about the first part on The 1929 Crash. The comments on Fla being deeply impcated by the crash is just wrong. Land was overvalued and sold like stocks on the stock market w/ a great deal of wild speculation, but the hurricanes that hit during the 20's (1927 and 2 category 4's in '26 and '28) made the land impossible to sell. The filmmakers need to do better research.

Comments about PBS American Experience: The 1930s DVD:

I thought this DVD gave a good description on what happened during certain events just before the 'Crash of 1929' and The Depression. I saw most of the parts on PBS with the exception of 'The Civilian Conservation Corps' of which I never knew about till now. What impressed me about the CCC, was that FDR was concerned about the unemployed and was able to get them jobs.
