BRONX PRINCESS follows headstrong 17-year-old Rocky's journey as she leaves behind her mother in New York City to reunite with her father, a chief in Ghana, West Africa. Excellent, Contemporary and Connected

Comments about PBS Bronx Princess DVD:

I showed excerpts of this movie to a middle school 8th grade class just as a warm up activity so that they could do some reflection about our theme "Everyone needs someone to lean on". The students just loved Bronx Princess and forced me to continue showing pieces of the video until they saw it all.
My school is very diverse and many of the students are first or second generation immigrants. They all certainly connected with Rocky's experiences and it provided a launching pad for meaningful discussion about a number of cross cultural issues. I also admire the way that the lives of people in Ghana were portrayed in a positive light rather than the stereotypical images that are promulgated by our Eurocentric perspective of the World. This is an excellent video for Middle school children. My students certainly connected with the changes that Rocky was experiencing.
