As an amateur historian I was completely enthralled with every minute of each 2 hour segment and did not miss a minute of it. I was at the Chaurauqua Inst. in the summer and saw all the previews and listened to Ken Burns and Geoffrey Ward speak of the making of it. I enjoyed their presentation so much I watched of it all and even went on a week-long jaunt to New York after to see the Roosevelt Mansion and Museum. A must-see for everyone who likes history in detail and so well-done as this.

An amazing job of thoroughly researched work that covers the many generations of all the Roosevelts. As one of the affluent, founding families of Dutch NYC in the 1600's, to the modernization of America. Ironically, while politically informative and educating, it also brought to light the many, many flaws behind the personal lives of all the major players. Concentrating mostly on the era of Theodore Roosevelt to FDR, it was amazing to see the expansive growth of America starting at the beginning of the 20th century due to the bold governing of the Roosevelts. However, the tragedy and major imperfections of these people made for a sad, unhappy outcome in their personal lives. Sometimes the more you know, the darker the result. Insecurities, loveless marriages, tragic loss and the usual political infighting and dark side of America's history(racial inequality, women's rights, assassinations...)take the viewer down a path they can't help but be befuddled with. It also makes this very long documentary (over 14 hours)become a test of will. Where many documentaries inspire and touch, this intrigued, but saddened and sometimes frustrated. Also, while it emphasized and showed how great America can be with the aid of our Government thanks to the Roosevelts, we know in present day that the fights against socialism started in this era still blindly continue until this day. One cannot help but wonder if this documentary being sponsored by PBS, which also has the Koch Brothers on their board of directors, did not somehow influence the direction of this documentary. Downplaying the amazing feats of the New Deal, for the pathetic drama that was the Roosevelt family.

Comments about PBS Ken Burns: The Roosevelts: An Intimate History DVD Plus Free Tote Bag:

I truly couldn't wait to see how Ken Burns would tell the Roosevelts stories from week to week, I rarely have been so interested in a series. I was absolutely glued to the TV, and it was the talk of our workplace providing us with interesting and lively conversation each week. Absolutely brilliant!
