Excellent story of family relations, egos, and the newspaper industry in general, as well as the development of Los Angeles into a major city.

Comments about PBS Inventing LA: The Chandlers and Their Times DVD:

Born and raised in L.A., "Inventing L.A." should be MANDATORY FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN IN L.A'S EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM. It is excellent historical information which gives the history re. land development, water and those who control the growth of L.A., L.A.'s politics and it's people. Keep showing "Inventing L.A." but publicize it on PBS other T.V. stations for greater exposure so
people will tune in and learn about their city.

Building a Metropolis From the Ground Up

Comments about PBS Inventing LA: The Chandlers and Their Times DVD:

POWERFUL is the first word which comes to mind to describe this documentary about a family I knew nothing about prior to viewing a wonderful presentation. Civic pride and a sense of responsibility to one's community, greed, avarice, union busting, and, yes, humbleness ALL run through this highly fascinating "report" on how the Otis/Chandler clans built one of the greatest cities in human kind from dust to unimaginable riches through a medium shrinking less in importance to our lives each day: A newspaper. How is this possible? Watch the show. For a history buff like myself, a priceless look at Americana which flows from 1837 to the present day. The two hour program never gets bogged down in detail and is a true blue real life "soap opera" about a family which didn't see eye to eye--apparently to this day. A veritable MUST SEE for anyone billing himself/herself a "journalist" or an historian of print journalism in our country. Learn about something NEW today...check out INVENTING LA. Thanks PBS for a gem.
