This 4-hr version is the ultimate. It was a 4-part mini-series, airing on 07/8/09, 07/15/09, 07/22/09, and 07/29/09.

For 17% less $, you can buy the 2-hr boiled-down version. However, this is the complete package - presented in its original format as-aired.

PBS has corrected their error, since my original post on 07/26/09 (see below). At that point in time, the Product Description on the PBS website for the 2-hr version was listed as 16x9 Anamorphic (widescreen optimized). But the Product Description for the 4-hr version was listed as 4x3 Fullscreen (optimized for the older TV screen aspect ratio).

As of this date (02/11/10), the Product Description for THIS version (4-hr complete package) is now listed as 16x9 Anamorphic.

So, one of two things had to have occurred over the past 7 months: Either (1) the initial 4-hr DVD was optimized for the older TV set CRT-screen shape, and only the 2-hr DVD was optimized for the newer TV set Flat-Panel screen shape, or (2) the Product Description listing for the 4-hr DVD (listing it as 4x3 Full) was inaccurate back on 07/26/09. Not sure which of the two possibilities was the actual case. Either PBS aimed the two different versions (2-hr & 4-hr) at different populations of TV owners, or their web staff was supplied or communicated erroneous information. If so, fine, people make mistakes. We all make mistakes. You haven't done anything lately, if you haven't made mistakes. Nice recovery! No harm, no foul.

The point of this is post is that, if you seek to obtain the "real McCoy" (original uncut program mini-series), then this is the version you should buy. No need to shy-away from giving this complete 4-hr version serious purchase consideration, because it is now billed as what the people want (widescreen optimized).

So, for just a few dollars more than the 2-hr DVD, you can now safely consider buying this 4-hr DVD and get all of the program material as it originally aired.

The DVD choice is yours (boiled-down 2-hr .vs complete 4-hr). But either way, you can rest assured that the program will sufficiently fill your entire Flat-Panel TV, with no black bars on either side of the screen. People act more confidently on good information - because when we know better, we do better.

I enjoy this film bought at a local Fry's store for [$]. (San Jose, CA) With a MBA degree from top 10 business school, I believe I have the background to comprehend the entire 4 episodes. Unfortunately, I scrambled to look for English subtitle to associate historical names with subjects. The biggest drawback of this film is lack of English subtitle. I guess the producer wanted us to buy his book to fill in the blanks by ourselves. In general, this film is not deep enough in all its coverage and suitable for homeschool use. I would recommend it to 6-10 levels.

MAKING SENSE OF TODAY'S ECONOMY

Comments about PBS The Ascent of Money: The Financial History of the World (4 Hr.) DVD:

ECONOMICS, POLITICS, and the STOCK MARKET never seems to make sense until you are aware of what is included in this most factual, interesting, and intelligent history program.
Especially, in todays plight of decreasing middle class, our society is in dire need of information to form intelligent decision in voting, banking, investing, and viewing the whole of how our decisions are affecting todays world economy.
In listening to our Presidential candidates it is embarrassing to listen to their opinions of foreign economics. Do they really believe their citizens are that ignorant? I hope we will prove that we are in fact more informed than they think. Bullying is not a solution to getting votes. Insulting and degrading their opponents have become shameful and a bad influence on our children. I can watch Ascent of Money over and over... thank you!
