THE NATIONAL PARKS is the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved for everyone. The series traces the birth of the national park idea in the mid-1800s and follows its evolution for nearly 150 years, chronicling the addition of new parks through the stories of the people who helped create them.

An excellent series on our National Parks, how they came about and have signified how we are different than the rest of the world. Not only is the main series very good but it is well worth playing the Special Features / Outtakes' that are included. The only thing I found bad about this documentary is the over the top spin that the Sierra Club presents. If you can get by their strong bias or if you agree with the Sierra Club's position you will thoroughly love this presentation created by Ken Burns. At any rate you will learn a lot about our parks history and the politics behind them. Blu-Ray is the way to go if you have the player for that but there is some poorly shot footage that might make you think your player is screwing up, it's not though.

This was advertized as Blu-Ray what it turned out to be was lots of older information upgraded to. blu-ray. Don't get me wrong there are some Blu-ray 1080 to some of the content. Our Wonderful ark System is well documented. I would have bought this as a standerd DVD's because all the old information although factual is not HD it is upgraded to HD.

Comments about PBS Ken Burns: The National Parks: America's Best Idea - Blu-ray:

After watching this excellent program, I felt as if I 've known John Muir all of my life. The complete telling of his passion, committment, and resolve to save our beautiful lands for all the people, along with the great musical score, at times left me in tears. The entire series is the closest possible to have actually been there. What great Americans they all were. I hope that this series will connect with each succeeding generation.

Bravo to Ken Burns and PBS.

Got this in Bluray, which only adds to the enjoyment of this program. As a person who totally enjoys the outdoors and State and National Parks , I have to say this adds an insight to the National Parks development I never knew exisited.

Comments about PBS Ken Burns: The National Parks: America's Best Idea - Blu-ray:

This is a very good series that shows wonderful pictures of our National Parks while telling interesting stories of how they came to be. Most of the parks in the US are covered and the history goes to 1980. Hopefully there will be a newer one someday. In the field they used a Super 16mm film camera for its portability. Super 16 is a wide screen version of 16mm. Like all film today, if you look really close at the Blu-ray image in the screen you can see some effect of film grain but overall from a reasonable viewing distance it is excellent. And the images are superb. The choreography is riveting. Each disk contains one episode of the 6 part series plus some extras that add to the enjoyment.

The whole 6 disks are stuffed in one Blu-ray case with 4 of them suspended on very weak hinges which were all broken in shipment due to the weight of the disks so I have some trouble fitting it all back in the case. There is also writeup on the disks but it is on the back of the paper sleeve so you have to remove the sleeve from the case to read it. Had the packaging been better I would have given it 5 stars.
