A provocative multi-media project that establishes Native history as an essential part of American history. The centerpiece of this initiative is a television series that tells five heartbreaking, yet inspiring stories. Together they highlight Native ingenuity and resilience over the course of 300 years. The series upends two-dimensional stereotypes of American Indians as simply ferocious warriors or peaceable lovers of the land.

NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE IN THIS DOCUMENTORY IS AN ACTOR AND THE PLACES ARE REAL! NO ONE GOT PAID AND THERE IS NO MONIES COMING BACK TO THE TRIBES OR PEOPLES. I KNOW ALL THIS BECAUSE MY FUTURE HUSBANDS FAMILY IS IN THIS DOCUMENTORY! The First Light! The Mashpee Wampanoag! The reason for the language change is because there is no Wampanoag word for the English word. I myself am German on mothers side and Blackfoot/Seneca on fathers side. I could not watch all of it as I cried through the first half and was to upset to watch the rest. I am going to get the DVD and have to watch it alone at my house with a few boxes of tissues. I am ashamed at the white man side of me and sad at the Native Part of me. Oh and the reason that Leonard was not included is because he has become ever so ill. Also I do not believe he was asked. This documentary should be required viewing throughout the United States not just by children, but by everyone who lives here and considers themselves Americans. UNDERSTAND WHY
"WE SHALL REMAIN" !!!!!!

Emotional for us who live this and are not understood.

Comments about PBS American Experience: We Shall Remain DVD:

I was truly enlightened by this documentary. I am a full blood Tlingit Indian from Angoon Alaska. A village that was shelled and destroyed by the U.S. Navy and Marines for a misunderstanding of cultural practice that was nowhere violent nor prejudicial against the non-natives. Although not included in this documentary one of the narrators stated perfectly: "Every tribe in this country has period of time of horror, absolute horror." Russell Means also stated the most obvious, "We were about to be obliterated culturally, our spiritual way of life, our entire way of life was about to be stamped out." I gave my first copy of this film away to my niece who is a elementary instructor and I will be ordering another copy soon.

Comments about PBS American Experience: We Shall Remain DVD:

I teach a community college Introduction to American Politics course and I always end the semester by showing the Wounded Knee Episode. Even though the documentary highlights the "paradox of American democracy," it is incredibly helpful in getting students to understand the nature of the domestic policy environment; how government chooses to interact with citizens and the consequences of poor choices.

All I can say is thank you for making such fine films on history that's hardly talked about. My entire family is wiser than before!
