Of the great ballerinas, Tanaquil Le Clercq may have been the most transcendent. She mesmerized viewers and choreographers alike - her elongated, race-horse physique became the new prototype for the great George Balanchine. The muse to both Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, they loved her as a dancer and a woman.

Comments about PBS American Masters: Afternoon of a Faun - Tanaquil Le Clercq DVD:

I confess I did not know who Tanaquil Le Clercq was. This DVD turned out to be one of the best "impulse purchase" I ever made out of curiosity. I discovered an amazing dancer, a great tragic figure, a strong-willed Muse and a life-affirming survivor of adversity who will serve as a source of inspiration as an artist and as a woman. A wealth of material went into making this extraordinarily moving documentary and the rare footage and photos bring to life decades of dance history in America and the careers of stellar figures like Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. I highly recommend it.

An amazing story of the human spirit that completely transcends dance to encompass the power of the human spirit in the face of tremendous adversity.

Saw this on PBS

Comments about PBS American Masters: Afternoon of a Faun - Tanaquil Le Clercq DVD:

Tanaquil Le Clercq was just luminous. I remember reading about her in long ago issues of Dance Magazine, but never saw live footage. A breathtaking thoroughbred. The film rather confirmed my feelings about Balanchine. :-( A must-see for dancers or ballet fans. She must not be minimized or forgotten.
