In the hot and deadly summer of 1964, the nation could not turn away from Mississippi. Over 10 memorable weeks known as Freedom Summer, more than 700 student volunteers joined with organizers and local African Americans in a historic effort to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in one of the nation's most segregated states -- even in the face of intimidation, physical violence, and death.

An Important Reminder Of Our Not So Past

By Diane

Comments about PBS American Experience: Freedom Summer DVD:

As we reflect on 95% of Americans being worse off since the implementation of Reagan's far right ideology that puts corporations before people, it is good to remember that there was a time when people were prepared to put their lives on the line to create a more eqalitarian world with justice for all the aim. This documentary provides vivid documentation of the evils of racism and the cancer within the American body politic that it remains.

Extraordinary history lesson

By Grammy

Comments about PBS American Experience: Freedom Summer DVD:

I was 19 and getting married at this point in time. I thought I understood things that were happening in our Country; I thought I was politically aware; I wasn't. Over the past year, I have been reading and watching video about the civil rights movement and the extreme bravery of those involved. I am humbled. I am also passing on this information to my Grandchildren.
