Single DVD

Built around the landmark 1954 legal case Hernandez v. Texas, the film interweaves the stories of its central characters with a broader story of the civil rights movement. It also brings to life the heroic post-World War II struggle of Mexican Americans fighting to dismantle the discrimination targeted against them.

Don't Let This Town Fool You!

By Echo

Comments about PBS American Experience: A Class Apart DVD:

I am Hispanic and Edna is my hometown. Graduated in 1970 from Edna High School. Even then, it was a big no-no to date a white girl. In matter of fact, it was unheard of to even think of that possibility. When I was in the 8th grade, the Blacks were intergraded with the rest of us. Tensions were high among the white and black students. Not so much for us Hispanics. Sure, things are different now in Edna when it comes to inter-racial marriages. But...
the Redneck atmosphere still exists through the town. Even in the courts and daily politics of this small town.

Comments about PBS American Experience: A Class Apart DVD:

This does an excellent job of explaining Mexican Americans and their struggle for equality. If you are a teacher who does the Civil Rights Movement, you need this to finish that unit.

Companion to Brown v Board of Education

Comments about PBS American Experience: A Class Apart DVD:

This dvd should be paired with " Eyes on the Prize" or "Brown v. Board of Education"! It explains the discrimination faced by Mexican-Americans in Texas at the very same time as African-Americans were fighting for their rights across the US. It should be seen together not as "A Class Apart".

Great History Lesson

Comments about PBS American Experience: A Class Apart DVD:

My Mother recently passed away, she grew up in this area and I know that she would have wanted her Children and Grandchildren to see this Program. So after seeing it, I went on-line and purchased it to share with my Family. She was very proud of her Mexican Heritage but, extremely proud of being an American. She was proud to say that her Four Sons Served Honorably in the Army and Marine Corps. I would encourage everyone to watch this program but, especially Mexican Americans so as not to forget the Sacrifices that our Parents made for us. "Those Who Do Not Learn From History Are Doomed To Repeat It." Not my Quote but, none the Less True. Great Program.
