The Haitian Revolution represents the only successful slave revolution in history; it created the world's first Black republic --- traumatizing Southern planters, inspiring U.S. Blacks, and invigorating anti-slavery activist world-wide. At the forefront of the rebellion was General Toussaint Louverture, an ex-slave whose genius was admired by allies and enemies alike.

I watched this last Sunday on PBS. I learned about Toussaint and the Haitian Revolution from my father. I have been waiting for someone to tell this story on the big screen (the little screen is a good start). Maybe one day someone will get the funding to take this story to the big screen so that all the world will know. Anyway, Haitians have so much to be proud of and as a descendant of American slaves, I have always cherished this story. As one of the historians in the show says, "It is the only nation created by slaves! And no one wants to talk about it.". Thankfully, for me, my dad has been talking about it for years. I'm am going to purchase two copies of the DVD, one for me and one for my father.

I'm an African American male who served in U.S. Air Force, Strategic Air Command during 1960's and 70's era.

I began to learn of "Toussaint Louverture" by listening to a discussion between other Airmen who lived on the East Coast of the USA and had attended High School and one or two years of College there. This was the first I'd known of this remarkable epic and History. I wished my High School experience had included this. I lived in Texas, knew lots of the exploiting of Indians, Africans and less about African exploitation away from USA.

I attended and graduated a University after my years in the military, this part of important history was given better depth by professors in US History and Western Civilization. The availability of this media would have broadened our knowledge of an important era in World History that did occur in our back yard.

Were this media available during those periods of time, our American experience may have evolved differently. We may have arrived at our present state, sooner and/or smarter.

Documentary should be part of U.S. educational curriculum

Comments about PBS Egalite for All: Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution DVD:

It is regrettable that not a word was said about the Battle of Vertières, on November 18, 1803, lost by General Rochambeau. That loss compelled the French to finally surrender and made Haiti's independence possible. Also, mention should have been made of the fact that the defeat of Napoleon's army by the Haitians was the reason why the Emperor sold Louisiana. If time was too short, a couple of minutes could have been removed from the description of the Bois Caiman Ceremony which in fact was too long.

This dvd gave me an insight into the world of slavery from outside of the United States. I found it to be very informational and historical.

Comments about PBS Egalite for All: Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution DVD:

I did a presentation on Toussaint and this was one the first things I looked at while gathering info on him. I liked this, because it gave me the idea of who Toussaint was and what the Haitian Revolution was like. I wouldn't show it to young kids though it gets a bit graphic.
