J. Robert Oppenheimer's life and legacy are inextricably linked to America's most famous top-secret initiative - the Manhattan Project. But after World War II, this brilliant and intense scientist fell from the innermost circles of American science, and at the height of the Red Scare, the veil of suspicion fell over Oppenheimer. This biography presents a complex and revealing portrait of one of America's most influential scientists.

Comments about PBS American Experience: The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer DVD:

An engrossing, didactic story about the great achievements of a great scientist and the petty politicians and an envious scientist who set out to ruin his life.

When Idealism Meets Realism

Comments about PBS American Experience: The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer DVD:

This film combines documentary footage with theatrical reenactments taken from various transcripts to sketch the development and evolution of a brilliant (yet politically naive) scientist who eventually was "destroyed" by professional rivals and agenda-driven political personalities.

The Oppenheimer story thus remains a powerful cautionary tale about the challenges of being in public life and engaged in public service. The story is well-told and topical in its current implications.

Shadows of our past predict our future.

Comments about PBS American Experience: The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer DVD:

This compelling story of the dark treatment of Oppenheimer(by our government) who was more than loyal to his country. His sacrifice is huge and his punishment for telling the truth is huge. The underhanded and harmful power of Dr. Teller is well shown in this documentary. We can learn a lot from this documentary that is applicable to our present nuclear decisions; and I highly recommend it to all as necessary viewing, but you will also be totally caught up in it.
