This is quality from the first scene to the last.
The requisite dining hall scene was so effectively somber and imposing that I just had to watch the rest, and I doubt I'll ever forget the imagery from Oliver's journey to London. Adam Arnold is perfect as The Dodger, and William Miller's portrayal of Oliver evokes both sympathy for his character's plight and deep respect for Oliver's courage.
Too much Fagin and not enough Oliver (especially THIS Oliver) in this version; whenever young Miller is onscreen, it's riveting. His diction is beautiful, and his ability to portray a child struggling through nearly overpowering fear is remarkable and rare; Miller's skill at this is the most crucial aspect of this particular tale; otherwise, it's just another beautiful but forgettable version of a pathetic, mistreated Oliver.
American PBS audiences should know that a number of important scenes were omitted from the 2011 broadcast, so buy the DVD! It's subtitled (mercifully) and includes some memorable extras like Adam and William comparing their North and South London accents. Priceless stuff!

A great movie, a poor adaptation.
Reviewing this movie as a movie only, it was excellent. However, don't expect "Oliver Twist" as you read it from the novel- this adaptation alters the story quite a bit.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Oliver Twist DVD:
I have seen all of the previous adaptations ever made and I was so swept up into this version that I had to purchase it. I think it is the whole production and the superb acting that make it so compelling to watch. Everything is A-1 and is a classic that I and my family will enjoy over and over.

An outstanding historical Dickens novel featuring the darkly delicious Tom Hardy of Wuthering Heights fame. Do not pass this one up!
