Comments about PBS Great Performances: Gospel at Colonus DVD:
Some of the best singing I've ever heard and Morgan Freeman is having a ball.
This will make a great gift.
Comments about PBS Great Performances: Gospel at Colonus DVD:
I saw this on PBS in the mid-eighties and fell in love from the first song. My grandmother watched it with me and it remains one of my fondest memories of our times together.
I managed to get a copy of the show in VHS format and made the mistake of loaning it to a 'friend' who never returned it. Yep, the friendship ended over that.
I was so pleased to finally get a DVD copy. I agree with others about the quality of the video. It is not the best but the performances trancend those limitations. Get this if you can and treasure it. Jevetta Steele will tear your heart out when she sings "How Shall I See You through my tears". I can't make it through a viewing without bawling.
Comments about PBS Great Performances: Gospel at Colonus DVD:
I can only heartily second "Sista" Nia's comments. My sister & I have both been searching for a copy of this outstanding production ever since it was originally broadcast, even though we both came to view the program independently. I only sorry that I never got the opportunity to see the stage production "live". What a moving experience. Amen!!!
Comments about PBS Great Performances: Gospel at Colonus DVD:
this is certainly better than nothing at all, and better than the previous vhs tape. but the overall quality of the video images is shamefully poor. that's really too bad because the concept of the show is clever and moving. and the performances are also riveting. you can tell by looking at the dvd how bright and vivid the costumes are in the chorus, but unless you had seen a live production (i had), it might be hard to tell what you are missing. i don't suppose a blu-ray version would be any better because the upconversion from my blu-ray player had little effect. i guess there isn't a master for the show of any significant quality. i can see the rationale from pbs. this show has limited appeal and just isn't worth the money to do it right if that is even possible.
so, even with video quality that is barely tolerable even in a vhs format, it is still worth watching because of the many powerful performances. i waited years for the dvd to come out and was very disappointed in the quality. well, with the advances in digital editing etc, it may yet be possible to get the video quality that this show richly deserves.
