snow bound and grateful

Comments about PBS The Day the Universe Changed DVD:

Snow bound for several days in our cabin with James Burke and the Day the Universe Changed. It can't get much better. Never a dull monent. I first watch the series and read the book when it was first released years ago. The freshness of the series is still inspiring over two decades later.

Comments about PBS The Day the Universe Changed DVD:

I first saw this series when it was aired on PBS 20 or more years ago. I was impressed with the depth and clarity of the explanations of major events in history which have changed how humans view the world and function in it. I was very excited when I came across the series in the PBS online catalogue and ordered it imediately. Now my children can benefit from watching it as well. If I were teaching high school I would definitely devote some time to screening this series for my students. James Burke has a terrific way of threading things together, connecting the dots, and making profound sense.

I wish I had teachers who were this entertaining and interesting when I was in school. This is what TV was meant to be.

Comments about PBS The Day the Universe Changed DVD:

A wonderful perspective on how changes in daily life has led to more changes and more invention. Connecting the dots of history could not have been explained better. His Connections series is equally spellbinding.

Best History of Science Ever

Comments about PBS The Day the Universe Changed DVD:

James Burke stresses both the persons of Science and the constant thievery of ideas and methods across all disciplines of human endeavor. Strong where scientific studies of "paradigms" are weak, inciteful where most History of Science attempts are merely polemical, Burke is like the fresh air of the Scots "common sense" philosophers in admitting all causes, and all potential results (not the least of which are personal and social economics). You will learn so much, so quickly from this roller-coaster ride through ideas that you will literally cry with joy at having seen it. More focused than the somewhat environmentalist "Connections" series, Burke is best here. You will come away determined to read more and read more deeply in both the history of sciences and the history of civilizations. Worth more than 8 credits of Western Civ at any University now matriculating students.
