Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, writer, and naturalist Joe Hutto has done it again. Touching the Wild is the enchanting story about one man who has lived with a herd of mule deer in the Wind River mountains of Wyoming for almost seven years. Why, you may ask, would a person choose to do such a thing? His response: how could you not? For Joe Hutto, close proximity to wild things is irresistible.

To every living thing there is a season

Comments about PBS Touching the Wild: Living with the Mule Deer of Deadman Gulch (Hardcover):

This was one of the most profound books I've read in a long time. There are so many lessons and insights brought out, and not solely limited to animals. Change is part of life and it does not just occur in the change of the seasons. When one is taught this from an early age it makes one appreciate life as it is being lived and certainly limits one's regrets. Joe Hutto and his wife are to be commended for their care and love of the animals they are so privileged to know and have contact with on their ranch. This goes far beyond stewardship of the land and the animals. There is a purpose for every living thing on earth. Those of us who surround ourselves with lives shorter than our own - be they domestic or wild animals - know we will experience loss and pain, yet we would live no other way. This book is reflective of the joy and sorrow that comes from living a life with the proper priorities.

Comments about PBS Touching the Wild: Living with the Mule Deer of Deadman Gulch (Hardcover):

I wish our schools would require students to read books like this and learn to care for our natural world. This is a beautiful book and one which touches anyone who has known an animal - and hopefully ones who have not had that privledge yet.

Comments about PBS Touching the Wild: Living with the Mule Deer of Deadman Gulch (Hardcover):

I love this story of a human who stepped out to learn wild animals have human emotions. In Idaho I learn about the Mule deer, during bad winters, droughts and fire of Yellowstone. I started a child's book series on the suffering of the mule deer. In Arkansas I feed and care for the White tail deer and other wild animals. This story touched my heart and caused tears to flow. Powerful!
