Joe Hutto's remarkable ability to interact with wild creatures was previously portrayed in the award-winning NATURE film, My Life as a Turkey. His new wild family is made up of mule deer living high in the mountains near his home in Wyoming, and the extraordinary story of how he became one of them pushes once again at the boundaries of how we perceive wild animals.

Comments about PBS NATURE: Touching the Wild: Living with the Mule Deer of Deadman Gulch DVD:

Absolutely spell binding. I couldn't begin to describe the feelings of deep love, respect, and trust that was demonstrated. The only language needed was the language of love.

Comments about PBS NATURE: Touching the Wild: Living with the Mule Deer of Deadman Gulch DVD:

A wondrous peek into the world of the mule deer. The remarkable friendship between Joe Hutto and the mule deer on his ranch is the rarest kind, where the years pass, but the memories of one another remain vivid, picking up right where they left off. He is right when he says he is privileged to have known the numerous individual deer in this special herd. Trust is such a rare commodity these days, among people as well as animals. It takes very special people to gain such trust, friendship and love from such sensitive and rightfully distrustful wild creatures. At once a heart-warming and heart-wrenching story.

Another fascinating look at a species

Comments about PBS NATURE: Touching the Wild: Living with the Mule Deer of Deadman Gulch DVD:

As always, Joe Hutto's insights on the species with whom he interacts are enlightening and fascinating. However, wish Joe had clarified the important dynamic of Apex Predators in an ecosystem. The segment about the predation of the Mule Deer by Wolves, Cougar, etc. was a bit one-sided and may lead to further erosion of the quite tenuous acceptance of the of Apex Predators to their natural habitats.

Comments about PBS NATURE: Touching the Wild: Living with the Mule Deer of Deadman Gulch DVD:

Joe Hutto is able to bridge the divide between scientific observation and heartfelt interaction without the sentimentality of wishful anthropomorphization. I gifted this to my young niece & nephew to broaden their understanding of the wildlife that surrounds them.
