In 1940, the RAF's supply of US aircraft had been sunk at sea by relentless German U-boats. The only solution was to fly the planes across the unforgiving Atlantic. A call for experienced civilian pilots for a secret operation went out. The benefits were irresistible: a vital job, a chance to fly the latest aircraft, and a large paycheck; but the risks were colossal. This is one of the great unknown stories of WWII and of aviation history.

Comments about PBS Flying The Secret Sky DVD:

Truly amazing to see what courage and tremendous skill these men had. Without them the war would have probably been lost.

Comments about PBS Flying The Secret Sky DVD:

I was soooo excited to see this documentary....My blessed father....DeWitt Charles Southwick was summoned to oversee the building of this air-base in Argentia.....Gander Newfoundland. My Father was 61 years old and was gone for 2 years....
@ $1,000 a month.!!....big money in those years. My Dad reported they built everything from coffins to barracks to forms for the air strip.....He was known to the "newfies" as Captain D.
I was only a very little girl of 10 so the absence of my Father for those two yers were big.
My Mother and I were able to train from Duluth, MN to Sydney Nova Scotia and then off to Baddeck Nova Scotia for a 1 mo dream vacation with my blessed Father. We were to take a ship up the St Lawrence River but had to change plans as U Boats had been sunk in the river that time.
I will share this movie with my children along with the beautiful "censored" letters that he often wrote to me....they were censored by "cutting" the words out.
Again thanks for the wonderful documentary

Comments about PBS Flying The Secret Sky DVD:

This is an excellent overview of a bold and heroic effort to supply the RAF with desperately needed aircraft during World War II. It should be viewed by every young adult today, who has no concept of total war. The history of the causes of the War is clearly presented to explain why an Allied victory was essential and why willing sacrifices had to be made by everyone involved.
